Product Description

Comprehensive Guide to Purchasing Steel Channels: Technical Specifications, Standards, and Bulk Supply

A steel channel (U-Channel) is a structural profile with a U-shaped cross-section made of a horizontal web and two vertical flanges. In industrial projects, machinery framing, marine structures, towers, and steel building frameworks—especially bracing systems—channels play a critical role in resisting lateral forces and maintaining structural integrity. Selecting the correct grade and dimensional standard directly affects safety and cost-efficiency.

Classification of Channels Based on Dimensional Standards (Cross-Section Shape)

Channels are categorized into two primary types based on flange geometry:

1. UPN Channel (UNP Standard)

Produced according to European standards, this profile features tapered flanges—flange thickness decreases from the web toward the edges. Due to its higher thickness and weight, UPN is used in heavy structural applications, bracing systems, beams, and trusses. It is generally classified as a heavy channel.

2. UPE Channel (Parallel Flange)

This profile—also known as a C-Channel—features fully parallel flanges with uniform thickness. Parallel flanges provide better contact surfaces for bolted and welded connections. UPE channels typically weigh less than UPN channels.

Weight Classification (Lightweight vs Heavyweight)

In the Iranian steel market, channels are classified based on compliance with Stahlbau Profile (Stahl Table):

  • Lightweight Channels: Produced below the minimum weight specified in the Stahl table. Mainly manufactured by private mills such as Nab Tabriz, Shakofteh Mashhad, and Abhar. Suitable only for non-structural applications, framing, and secondary repairs.
  • Heavyweight Channels: Fully compliant with DIN EN 1026 dimensions and weights. ESCO (Esfahan Steel) and imported Russian/Turkish channels fall under this category. For engineered structures designed based on precise stress calculations, using heavyweight channels is mandatory.

Steel Grade and Mechanical Properties

Channels are commonly produced in the following structural steel grades:

  • ST37 Steel: Yield strength: 235text{ MPa}. The most common grade with excellent weldability and machinability.
  • ST52 Steel: Yield strength: 355text{ MPa}. Higher tensile strength; used for heavy machinery frames and components subjected to dynamic loads.
